OPENING SPEECH
History and future of nicotine plus some learnings from the Swedish end-game
Speaker: Karl Fagerstrom
Professor Fagerstrom in his introductory speech will focus on the history and future of nicotine, based on learnings from the Swedish end-game. The history of nicotine replacement treatment started when two Swedish physicians were doing research on different atmospheric pressure and dealt with submarine crews who were using snus, as they were not allowed to smoke in the submarine. As Professor Fagerstrom will comment, the new strategy is to reduce medical and social harm caused by tobacco and nicotine products and differentiate between harmful effects and different product types. During his speech, Professor Fagerstrom will also show data that smoking prevalence can be reduced with the help of alternative products.
