Psychiatrist, PhD Candidate; Former Member of the European Parliament

Greece

Dr. Stelios Kympouropoulos is a psychiatrist, researcher, and public figure whose work spans clinical psychiatry, European policymaking, and health systems transformation. A former Member of the European Parliament (2019–2024), he played a pivotal role in advancing digital health, rare disease policy, and patient rights across the EU. He was among the first to advocate for patient-centric amendments to the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and has consistently championed accessible, rights-based healthcare systems. He is currently completing his PhD at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, focusing on the immunological and microbiotic correlates of depression in patients with chronic inflammatory conditions.

Recognised in the 2024 Health Policy Leaders rankings as the top Member of the European Parliament among all parliamentarians, Dr. Kympouropoulos stands out for his cross-sectoral impact and commitment to systemic reform. His advocacy is shaped not only by professional experience but also by his personal journey as a person living with a rare neuromuscular disease, an experience that informs his work on stigma, inclusion, and the social determinants of health. He actively collaborates with international health-policy platforms, think tanks, and research networks, contributing insight on digital innovation, mental health, and vulnerable populations. His voice continues to resonate at the intersection of medicine, policy, and social justice.
