Information & Misinformation about THR

There is a need to step up the efforts towards a new broader approach to smoking control policies and tackle the misinformation about Tobacco Harm Reduction – THR. There is a lot of discussion about the need to complement current public health policies with THR. However, views about its value are conflicting. What is true and what is not? Many years following the introduction of WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the prevalence of smoking is falling but, still, the number of smokers is rising! There is a growing belief that smoking cessation and smoking prevention may not be adequate policies to reverse the smoking epidemic and that THR policies should be adopted as complementary policies to smoking cessation and prevention. In this session, Tim Phillips will present an assessment of global regulation for THR products, and the impact on market growth and consumer uptake. Solomon Rataemane will discuss the relevant legislation in South Africa and Giuseppe Biondi Zoccai will discuss THR with respect to existing scientific evidence.
