Dr Anita Suleiman is a distinguished Consultant Public Health Physician with over 25 years of expertise in communicable disease control. During her distinguished career, she helped shape Malaysia’s HIV response and contributed to reducing Malaysia’s new HIV cases by more than half from their 2002 peak. As a strong advocate for harm reduction, Dr Anita spearheaded the introduction of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) services in government primary care clinics, helping to expand HIV prevention efforts in healthcare settings in an effort to further reduce HIV cases and ultimately end AIDS.

She retired as Director of Disease Control, Ministry of Health in 2024 but remains actively engaged in HIV prevention as a consultant. Driven by her passion for harm reduction, Dr Anita founded the Harm Reduction Action Network Malaysia (HaRAN), an NGO dedicated to reducing health risks associated with high-risk behaviours, including smoking. Through awareness, advocacy, research, and support services, HaRAN promotes evidence-based harm reduction strategies to create healthier, safer communities.

She is past President of the College of Public Health Medicine, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.
